Maternal, Newborn and Infant Clinical Outcome Review Programme: Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care Report
The Maternal, Newborn and Infant Clinical Outcome Review Programme has published their latest report into maternal deaths. The report reviews surveillance data on women who died during or up to one year after pregnancy, between 2017 and 2019 in the UK (495). It also includes Confidential Enquiries into the care of women who died in that period from mental health-related causes, venous thromboembolism, homicide and malignancy. Key findings include:
- Cardiac disease remains the largest single cause of maternal deaths
- Neurological causes (epilepsy and stroke) are the second most common cause of maternal death, and
- Thrombosis and thromboembolism remains the leading cause of direct maternal death during or up to six weeks after the end of pregnancy.
The report also found that there remains more than four-fold difference in maternal mortality rates among women from Black ethnic backgrounds and an almost two-fold difference amongst women from Asian ethnic backgrounds compared to white women, emphasising a need for a continued focus on action to address these disparities.
