Sustainability Hero award announced
Published: 23 Jun 2023
The winner of the Clinical Audit Awareness Week 2023 Sustainability Hero award has been announced today; congratulations to:
WINNER: Amanda Van Vuuren, Darshana Dhaka, Mat MacDonald and Connor Brown, Consultant (Anaesthetics) and Junior Doctors at Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust
The team was recognised for identifying an opportunity to increase the number of Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) cases in Theatre 1 City and Theatre 2 Sandwell, and in doing so, having a significant impact on the reduction of volatile-gas based emissions (in support of the NHS long term plan and ‘net zero’ campaign aim for the NHS to be net zero by 2040).
The team aimed to make TIVA a more routine part of clinical practice in theatres, with the long-term aim of creating a shift in the clinical culture to make TIVA a more common choice across all the theatres in the Trust, where appropriate. The judges were impressed by the project’s awareness and training campaign, which involved a teaching afternoon and ‘How to’ trouble shooting videos.
The Clinical Audit Heroes Awards (part of Clinical Audit Awareness Week)
The Sustainability Hero Award recognises clinical audits and projects that support sustainable healthcare services going forward, and is one of five categories in this year’s Clinical Audit Heroes Awards. The winners of each award are announced at a series of daily Lunch & Learn events, hosted by N-QI-CAN, on each of the award topics from 19-23 June. Details of these events (and recordings for those who wish to listen again, once they have taken place) – in addition to news of all the winners – can be found on the Clinical Audit Awareness Week webpage.
And don’t forget to join in the fun by sharing online, using #CAAW23!
