Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – Annual Outcomes Report 2019

Reports | Published: 09 May 2019

This outcomes report describes the findings from linkage of the 2017 audit patient cohort (patients admitted to hospital on or after 1 February and discharged by 13 September 2017) and reports on 30 and 90 day readmission and mortality rates which allows for assessment of medium-term outcomes. It is intended to be read as an addendum to the clinical report, COPD: Secondary care clinical audit 2017: Working Together, published in April 2018. Together, these reports provide a comprehensive picture of the care provided to patients admitted to hospital for an exacerbation of COPD during this part of 2017 and what happened after they were discharged.

They key finding from this report is that a large proportion of both deaths (approximately 40%) and readmissions (approximately 60%) were not directly due to COPD. A holistic approach which focuses on multimorbidity is likely to benefit readmission and mortality rates.
