Primary respiratory care Wales 2021-23 (NRAP)
The National Respiratory Audit Programme (NRAP) has published a primary care clinical audit report for Wales (2021–23). Aimed at healthcare professionals in primary care, NHS managers, local health boards (LHBs) and policymakers, as well as voluntary organisations and people with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), it is based on data from 359 general practices in Wales between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2023.
This report contains a number of key findings relating to COPD as well as adult and childhood asthma, including:
- 54.4% of adults, and 39.8% of children, with asthma had a record of any objective measurement
- 27.9% of adults, and 24.1% of children, with asthma had a personalised asthma action plan in the last 15 months
- 13.9% of patients with COPD with a Medical Research Council (MRC) Dyspnoea score of 3–5 have been referred to Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) in the last 3 years.
It also contains five national recommendations relating to:
- Access within primary care to trained clinicians for accurate diagnosis of COPD and asthma
- Reducing exposure to second-hand smoke in children and young people with asthma
- Ensuring timely access to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR)
- Promoting the use of personalised asthma action plans (PAAPs)
- Optimising SNOMED CT codes used for respiratory patients.
