Vascular care – State of the Nation 2024 report (NVR)
The National Vascular Registry has published a State of the Nation report 2024 on the quality and outcomes of care for adults who had major vascular procedures during 2023 in NHS hospitals in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
While the outcomes following all vascular procedures remained similar to last year, the mix of procedures continues to change
While the outcomes following all vascular procedures remained similar to last year, the mix of procedures continues to change. Over the last three years, the number of procedures for elective infra-renal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair and repair of ruptured AAA have decreased. The number of carotid endarterectomies (CEA) has remained stable since 2021, but is almost half of the number performed in 2014. Other key findings include:
- The increasing number of major lower limb amputations observed last year continued into 2023
- The times from vascular assessment and admission to treatment for lower limb revascularisation, AAA and CEA have all increased within the last year, although there is variability across the UK.
This report also includes five key recommendations:
- Ensure that people with chronic limb threatening Ischaemia (CLTI) receive care urgently
- Identify reasons for the rise in the number of major lower limb amputations among people with peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
- Examine pathways to treatment for people requiring elective aortic aneurysm repair and carotid endarterectomy
- Improve access to endovascular repair of ruptured aortic aneurysms in suitable patients
- Develop better guidance on the coding of specific procedures.
